CBN Initiates Decongestion Plan, Transfers Key Departments to Lagos State

In a bid to optimize its operational environment, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has initiated a decongestion action plan, relocating some departments to Lagos State, as revealed in an internal memo sighted by SK Blog.

According to an official source within the CBN, the move aims to alleviate overcrowding at the bank’s head office in Abuja and enhance overall efficiency. The memo highlighted that safety concerns, reduced efficiency, and potential compromise of structural integrity were key factors necessitating the relocation.

The decision, attributed to CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, targets specific departments, including Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection, Payment System Management, and Financial Policy Regulations. Staff resistance has been noted, with some alleging tribal sentiments, but the CBN official assures that the move is primarily for safety and increased productivity.

The Abuja office, designed for 3,000 staff, currently houses 4,000 employees, posing threats to safety and facility integrity. The decongestion plan involves transferring 1,533 staff to other CBN facilities within Abuja, Lagos, and understaffed branches.

The memo outlines, “This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilization of our office space.” It further emphasizes the strategic alignment of departments to better collaborate with financial institutions predominantly located in Lagos.

CBN officials believe the relocation will not only address safety concerns and optimize workspace but also reduce maintenance costs and improve overall operational efficiency. The move is seen as a strategic response to align the bank’s structure with its functions and objectives.
