U.S. Accuses Iran of Plotting to Assassinate President-Elect Trump, Heightening Tensions

The U.S. Justice Department has charged Iran with orchestrating an assassination plot targeting President-elect Donald Trump. The accusation underscores heightened tensions between the two nations and reflects Iran’s alleged continued threats against prominent U.S. figures.

FBI Director Christopher Wray addressed the charges in a press release, describing them as evidence of Iran’s “brazen attempts” to threaten U.S. citizens and political figures, including Mr. Trump. The announcement followed revelations from a federal investigation in which a 51-year-old Iranian man with Afghan citizenship reportedly admitted to being instructed by Iranian officials to devise and carry out a plan to assassinate the former U.S. president.

U.S. investigators have deemed the allegations credible, signaling an intensified response from the FBI and other security agencies. Just weeks before, Mr. Trump’s campaign disclosed that it had been informed by the U.S. Secret Service of specific, “real and concrete” threats from Iran against the President-elect.

The Justice Department has since filed charges against the 51-year-old Iranian man and two other individuals allegedly involved in a separate plot to assassinate an Iranian dissident. Federal arrest warrants have been issued for all three men.

Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the alleged plot, stating that few international actors present as “grave a threat” to U.S. national security as Iran. “We will not stand for the Iranian regime’s attempts to endanger the American people and America’s national security,” Mr. Garland affirmed.

This latest allegation adds to a long-standing hostilities between Washington and Tehran. During his previous term as president, Mr. Trump withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, imposed stringent sanctions on Iran, and designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. His administration also carried out a high-profile drone strike in Baghdad, which killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
