U.S. Deploys Thousands of Paratroopers to Middle East as Iran Conflict Deepens
Thousands of U.S. Army paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, according to two U.S. officials, as President Donald Trump considers further military action in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
The deployment follows earlier reports that the administration was weighing options to expand its military presence in the region, including the possibility of operations inside Iranian territory. The newly arrived troops are based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and join a growing number of U.S. forces already deployed, including sailors, Marines, and Special Operations units.
Over the weekend, approximately 2,500 Marines were also sent to the region, adding to the rapid buildup of personnel and resources.
Officials did not disclose the specific locations of the paratroopers but indicated the move had been anticipated. The deployment includes elements of the 82nd Airborne Division’s headquarters, logistics and support units, and one brigade combat team.
While no final decision has been made to send ground troops into Iran, the current buildup is intended to expand operational flexibility for potential missions. Possible objectives under consideration include securing key strategic sites such as Kharg Island, which handles a significant share of Iran’s oil exports.
Military planners have also discussed scenarios involving the recovery of highly enriched uranium within Iran and ensuring safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. These options could require U.S. forces to operate inside Iranian territory, including along its coastline.
President Trump said the United States is engaged in talks aimed at ending the conflict but reiterated warnings that Iran must allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz or face further strikes on critical infrastructure, including oil and power facilities.
The prospect of deploying U.S. ground troops carries political risks, particularly given limited public support for the campaign and previous commitments to avoid deeper military involvement in the Middle East.
Since thesu start of operations on February 28 under Operation Epic Fury, U.S. forces have conducted strikes on more than 11,000 targets. The campaign has resulted in over 300 U.S. troops injured and 13 service members killed.
