Two Killed in Late-Night Attack Near Plateau Polytechnic, Students Flee
Tension gripped residents and students around Plateau State Polytechnic late Wednesday night after gunmen carried out an attack that left two people dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the Ban community, located opposite the institution. Witnesses reported sustained gunfire that forced residents, including off-campus students, to flee their homes.
Sources indicated that at least three people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment, while two victims were confirmed dead.
Students living in nearby lodges abandoned their residences amid fears that the violence could escalate. One student, James Nanbut, described the situation as chaotic, saying the attackers fired repeatedly for nearly an hour without interruption, leaving many scrambling to escape.
The attack came hours after another deadly incident in Riyom Local Government Area, further raising concerns about security in the region.
Earlier in the evening, at approximately 8:15 p.m., gunmen reportedly ambushed a group of youths along the road between Baten village in Wereng Ward and Du’a village in Kwi Ward. A 27-year-old man, identified as Amos Monday, was killed in the attack.
The two incidents have heightened fears across parts of Plateau State, particularly in Riyom, Jos South, and Barkin Ladi areas.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed the attacks and advised residents in affected communities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
As of the time of reporting, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement. Attempts to reach its spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful.
Residents and students in the area remain on edge as uncertainty continues over the security situation.
