“Avenge Your Death” — Viral Jos Mother Buries Son with Cutlass After Attack
A grieving mother in Jos has sparked widespread reaction after a video surfaced showing her placing a cutlass inside her son’s coffin and urging him to avenge his killing.
The incident follows a deadly attack on March 29 in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area in Plateau State, where armed men reportedly opened fire on residents, leaving at least 24 people dead and several others injured.
The victim, identified as Promise Ayuba, was among those killed during the violence.
In the circulating video, his mother, Mrs Favour Ayuba, is seen visibly distraught as she speaks in Hausa while standing near her son’s coffin. She revealed that she had not eaten since the attack and described the depth of her loss.
“I have not eaten since Sunday,” she said, adding that she had prepared a final item for her son before burial.
She then brought out a cutlass wrapped in cloth and placed it in the coffin, saying she entrusted him with “revenge” for his death. In her words, she referenced her son’s name and expressed hope that he would “follow those responsible” and avenge what happened to him.
Mrs Ayuba also linked her son’s name, Promise Gideon Ayuba, to the biblical figure Gideon, recalling the story of a warrior who returned victorious from battle. She said she believed her son would not “rest” until justice was achieved.
