Troops Rescue 19 Kidnap Victims in Abuja, Recover Weapons

Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 19 people who were abducted in the Bwari area of the Federal Capital Territory during a joint security operation.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by Olawuyi Itunuoluwa, acting assistant director of army public relations at the Headquarters Guards Brigade, the victims were freed during a search-and-rescue mission around Gidan Dogo in Bwari area council.

The operation involved soldiers working alongside operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and local vigilantes.

The army said the mission followed intelligence reports that identified the location of suspected kidnappers linked to the recent abduction of residents in the Byazhin area of Bwari.

During the operation, troops engaged the suspects in a gun battle. One of the attackers was killed, while others fled the area with suspected gunshot wounds.

Security forces also recovered an AK-47 rifle and a locally fabricated firearm from the scene.

All 19 victims were rescued and evacuated to safety. The army said they are currently receiving care after the operation.

Troops involved in the mission have since returned to their base in Bwari but will continue patrols in the area to prevent further criminal activity.

Adebisi Onasanya, commander of the Guards Brigade, commended the soldiers and other security personnel involved in the operation for their efforts.

He said the brigade remains committed to protecting residents of the Federal Capital Territory and maintaining security in Abuja.
