Troops Kill Wanted IPOB Kingpin, Arrest Two ‘Notorious Terrorists’ in Imo State
The Nigerian army has announced a significant breakthrough in its operations against separatist groups in the south-eastern region of the country. In a series of coordinated raids, troops successfully eliminated a suspected kingpin of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.
According to an official statement released on the army’s Facebook page, the operation targeted Chinemerem, alias “Bam Bam,” at a suspected IPOB hideout in Ezeinyen Okwe Umucheke, Onuimo Local Government Area. Chinemerem was reportedly killed as he attempted to reach for a weapon, and several of his accomplices were arrested. The raid also resulted in the seizure of a cache of weapons, ammunition, and paraphernalia associated with IPOB/ESN, with the hideout subsequently destroyed.
Simultaneously, another operation in Ama Hausa, Okigwe Local Government Area, led to the interception of suspected IPOB/ESN members who fled, leaving behind ammunition and motorcycles after a shootout with troops.
In a separate development in Orlu Local Government Area, two notorious suspects, Izuchukwu Emejuru (“Kingkong”) and Chibuzor Chikwe (“Onyema”), were apprehended. The raid recovered various firearms, including a semi-automatic pump-action gun, a locally made gun, and a pistol. Valuables belonging to Ugonna Iriele, the traditional ruler of Ogberuru, which were reportedly looted during a previous attack, were also retrieved.
The army emphasized the collaborative effort with other security agencies but did not disclose specific details about their involvement. This operation signifies a significant step in the ongoing efforts to curb the activities of IPOB and other militant groups in the region, which have been linked to several deadly attacks despite the group’s denial of involvement.
In a related development, troops in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, north-central Nigeria, arrested another suspected terrorist, Ibrahim Abdullahi, recovering an AK-47 rifle, magazines, and ammunition.
The Nigerian army underscored the importance of these operations in addressing the complex security challenges posed by terrorist groups and criminal elements across the country.
