Tragic Road Crashes Claim 18 Lives in Oyo State, Residents Demand Urgent Action
In a distressing week for Ogbomoso residents, a series of road crashes on the major trunk A road has claimed the lives of 18 individuals and left many others with life-threatening injuries. The residents are now urgently calling on both the federal and state governments to address the perilous condition of the road by initiating dualization and implementing safety measures.
The road, linking Ogbomoso with cities in the southern and northern regions, has become a hotspot for accidents, prompting concerns from the community. Notable casualties include three traditional rulers from Oriire Local Government Area, who lost their lives while en route to a funeral party. Additionally, three motorcyclists perished in the Emaayo area, and a tragic incident at Sekona village resulted in nine individuals being burnt beyond recognition when a petrol tanker overturned and caught fire.
The frequency and severity of these incidents have left residents distressed and demanding immediate action. Many are advocating for the dualization of the road to reduce head-on collisions and enhance overall safety. Mr. Idowu Ashifa, speaking on behalf of the community, appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene urgently.
“I appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde to come to our aid by dualizing this road from Agric to Aroje or Igbon. Only yesterday, three traditional rulers died on the road. If the road is dualized, head-on collisions will reduce,” he emphasized.
Residents are also urging the government to construct flyover bridges at strategic locations such as Takie Square and Caretaker junction. Michael Adegbosin stressed the importance of turning the road over to the Oyo State government for easier maintenance upon completion of the federal dual carriageway.
“The way to reduce these road mishaps is for the government to make it a dual-carriageway so that head-on collisions will be reduced and it will allow drivers greater room for maneuvering in cases of emergencies,” Adegbosin stated.
Expressing the need for additional safety measures, another resident suggested the construction of flyovers in accident-prone areas. “Takie roundabout is prone to accidents; therefore, putting a flyover there will be a good solution. We appeal to Governor Makinde to construct an overhead bridge at this ever busy spot,” the resident remarked.
As the community mourns the loss of lives, the collective plea is for swift government intervention to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety of Oyo State residents on these perilous roads.
