The Political Turmoil Surrounding Ganduje: Can Tinubu Offer Salvation?
Mr. Ganduje, currently facing suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that President Tinubu stands firmly behind him amidst the turmoil.
A legal battle that began on 30 November and 17 December 2021, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, ruled against the faction led by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in an internal crisis within the Kano State chapter of the APC.
The conflict emerged between Mr. Ganduje and a group led by former governor Ibrahim Shekarau, then senator for Kano Central District. The clash resulted in parallel congresses and the emergence of two sets of state executives, highlighting the struggle for control over the party structures in Kano.
The aftermath of this crisis significantly contributed to the APC’s defeat in the 2023 general election in Kano. Many disgruntled members departed for the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) and the People Democratic Party (PDP), where some contested and won seats in the general elections.
The NNPP emerged as the primary beneficiary, securing a significant number of seats in the state House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and the governorship election, defeating Mr. Ganduje’s preferred candidate.
The repercussions of the crisis continue to haunt Mr. Ganduje. As the newly appointed National Chairman of the APC, he faces political conspiracies not only from opposition parties but also within his own party in Kano. Many within the APC blame him for the party’s downfall in the state, accusing him of imposing unpopular candidates and engaging in favoritism.
The recent suspension announced by Haladu Maigwanjo, claiming to be the legal adviser of the APC in Ganduje Ward, further complicates the situation. Although the suspension was swiftly dismissed by the state chairman of the party, Abdullahi Abbas, another APC group reiterated the suspension, accusing Mr. Ganduje of fostering divisions within the party.
Speculations arise regarding the motives behind these suspensions, with some pointing fingers at the NNPP-led state government for orchestrating the drama. The relationship between Governor Abba Yusuf and his political mentor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, both members of the NNPP, adds complexity to the situation.
Rumors of President Tinubu’s intervention surface, fueled by his alleged support for Mr. Ganduje. Their bond, established before the APC primaries, suggests that Tinubu may come to Ganduje’s rescue. Ganduje himself has reassured his supporters of Tinubu’s unwavering support amidst the ongoing turmoil.
Despite this assurance, Ganduje’s corruption trial in Kano courts looms, indicating that his challenges are far from over. The question remains: Will President Tinubu rally the party troops behind Ganduje, akin to President Buhari’s stance during Oshiomhole’s ordeal in 2020?
