“The Enthusiasm of Liverpool Fans Was Powerful Enough to Move the Earth” — Scientists Confirm Anfield Goal Celebrations Caused Earth Tremors
Anfield erupted with such intensity during Liverpool’s 5–1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur that the celebrations triggered small earthquakes, scientists from the University of Liverpool have confirmed. The seismic activity, caused by over 60,000 jubilant fans, was powerful enough to be recorded by sensitive underground monitoring equipment.
The most significant tremor, measuring 1.74 on the Richter scale, occurred when Alexis Mac Allister netted Liverpool’s second goal in the 24th minute. Further spikes were detected for goals by Mohamed Salah (1.60), Cody Gakpo (1.03), and a Destiny Udogie own goal (1.35). Even a disallowed goal from Luis Díaz produced a measurable tremor of 0.64.
The study, led by researchers Antoine Septier, Farnaz Kamranzad, and Professor Ben Edwards from the university’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences, was conducted in partnership with Liverpool FC. Professor Edwards explained that the seismic vibrations closely resembled those caused by natural tremors, with each goal unleashing waves of energy driven purely by crowd euphoria. Kamranzad described the event as a “seismic fingerprint of collective joy,” capturing the emotional force of the moment in the earth’s record.
Although the tremors weren’t strong enough to be felt in the stadium, the researchers believe the findings could inspire innovative uses in seismology and offer new ways to enrich live matchday experiences.
The win marked Liverpool’s 20th English league title and a commanding statement by new manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman became the first from his country to win the Premier League and joined an exclusive group of only five managers to clinch the title in their debut season, alongside Tom Watson, José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Manuel Pellegrini.
Despite an early opener from Spurs’ Dominic Solanke, Liverpool responded with a flurry of goals, backed by a raucous Anfield crowd. For many supporters, this triumph was especially meaningful as the club’s last title win in 2020 occurred under the cloud of pandemic restrictions and empty stadiums.
Liverpool FC has announced a citywide victory parade on 26 May, giving fans the opportunity to celebrate their historic achievement in full voice—and perhaps shake the ground once more.
