EPL: Merseyside Derby Postponed

The Premier League clash between Everton and Liverpool, scheduled to take place at Goodison Park, has been postponed due to adverse weather caused by Storm Darragh. The decision was made after consultations between both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, with safety concerns for fans, staff, and players taking precedence.

An amber weather warning for strong winds had been issued for the Merseyside area earlier on Saturday, raising fears of hazardous conditions. Everton released a statement expressing regret over the postponement but emphasized the importance of safety. “Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff, and players is of paramount importance,” the club said.

The match, which was set for a 12:30 GMT kickoff, would have been the last league derby between the two teams at Goodison Park before Everton’s planned move to their new stadium in 2025. Liverpool currently sit seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table, while Everton are positioned 15th, five points above the relegation zone.

Storm Darragh has caused widespread disruption across the UK, with multiple sporting events impacted. Championship matches Cardiff vs. Watford and Plymouth vs. Oxford, as well as the League One fixture between Bristol Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, have also been postponed. Race meetings at Chepstow and Aintree have been abandoned as well.

The Met Office has issued a red warning for parts of western and southern Wales, with winds expected to reach up to 90mph. Millions in Wales and south-west England have been advised to remain indoors to ensure their safety, and tens of thousands of homes are reported to be without power in affected areas.
