Super Eagles Striker Taiwo Awoniyi in Induced Coma After Emergency Surgery on Potentially Fatal Injury

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is in an induced coma and receiving intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City. The 27-year-old collided heavily with the post while chasing a cross and, despite receiving lengthy on-pitch treatment, attempted to play on before being substituted.

Forest confirmed on Tuesday that Awoniyi was rushed to hospital on Monday after the severity of the injury became clear. Surgery began shortly after and is believed to have been successful so far, though doctors were expected to continue the procedure into Tuesday due to its complexity. The injury, which the club revealed could have been life-threatening in some cases, has been described as one of significant concern, though Forest stated that the striker is now “recovering well.”

The club addressed criticism surrounding owner Evangelos Marinakis, who entered the pitch after full time and was seen speaking with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Some, including Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, interpreted the moment as confrontational. In a strongly worded statement, Forest clarified that Marinakis’s actions were driven by deep concern for the player’s welfare, criticising both their own medical staff and public figures who rushed to judgement without full knowledge of the situation.

Forest explained that the club had used all available substitutions and could not replace Awoniyi despite his obvious discomfort. The player attempted to continue but was visibly limited in his movement as Forest pushed for a winner that could have boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification.

In their statement, Forest emphasised the values instilled by Marinakis, saying he sees the club as family and acted out of instinct and emotional investment in the player’s wellbeing. The club denied any confrontation occurred and instead highlighted shared frustration with the decision to allow Awoniyi to continue playing. They called on commentators and former professionals to prioritise facts and respect over speculation.

The incident followed a contentious sequence in which Anthony Elanga, whose offside cross Awoniyi chased, was allowed to continue under current officiating protocols requiring delayed flagging. Forest ultimately dropped two points, and even if they win their final two fixtures, their Champions League hopes now depend on results elsewhere.
