Thailand police arrest Nigerian suspect in drug network crackdown

A Nigerian national, Nwaiwu Ifeanyi Placid, 46, has been arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, in connection with a cocaine trafficking network operating across the city’s nightlife areas.

According to reporting from the Bangkok Post, the arrest was carried out by the Metropolitan Police Bureau during an operation in the Silom area on Saturday night. Officers said the suspect was detained near Silom Soi 1, a busy nightlife district in central Bangkok, where about 27 grammes of cocaine were recovered.

Police stated that the operation was part of a broader investigation into an established drug distribution network linked to nightlife zones in the capital. Three other individuals were also arrested on possession-related charges: Swiss national Thomas Giubibini, and two Thai nationals identified as Thanayot Asawamethi, 35, and Nattawat Wangkitjinda, 34.

Authorities reported that total seizures from the operation included roughly 30 grammes of cocaine, a vehicle, 1.5 million baht in cash, foreign currency equivalent to 15,000 baht, and jewellery valued at around 400,000 baht.

Investigators linked the arrests to earlier enforcement actions against the same group. In October last year, officers reportedly dismantled a network operating from Nana and arrested nine Nigerian suspects. A follow-up raid in January led to additional arrests and asset seizures exceeding 7 million baht.

Police also identified another Nigerian suspect, known as “Patrick,” aged 47, as a key figure in the network. He is alleged to have lived in Thailand for about 17 years and to have operated a supply chain described by investigators as a “middleman-free” structure.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau said officers monitored encrypted communication channels used by the group before carrying out the arrests.

Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thamsuthee said the suspect resisted arrest before being restrained by officers and later admitted to the allegations during questioning.

Investigations are ongoing, and all suspects remain in custody as authorities continue to trace the wider network.
