Nigerian Man Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison in India for Drug Trafficking
A Nigerian national, Emmanuel Chukwunonso Samson, has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, for drug trafficking. He was also fined Rs 1 lakh following his conviction under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The case dates back to July 17, 2012, when officers of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai Zonal Unit, intercepted three courier parcels in Chennai. Concealed in ladies’ handbags, car gasket cardboard packs, and embroidery items, the parcels were destined for countries including West Africa, Australia, and Spain. A detailed examination led to the recovery of 1.195 kilograms of heroin and 200 grams of methaqualone, with an estimated international market value of over Rs 2 crore.
Investigations traced the shipments to Samson, also known as James, who was arrested in Erode. During his arrest, officials seized four kilograms of ganja, allegedly procured for international trafficking. Authorities revealed that he used courier services to smuggle narcotics abroad. The NCB filed its complaint in September 2012, leading to the recent conviction on September 20, 2025.
A senior police officer confirmed that Samson has already completed the 10-year sentence and has now been moved from prison to a special camp. The NCB described the conviction as a significant achievement in its ongoing battle against drug trafficking and reiterated its commitment to the vision of a drug-free India. Citizens have been urged to report narcotics-related information through the National Narcotics Helpline (1933), with assurances that informants’ identities will remain confidential.
