Beggar Discovered to Own Multiple Houses, Vehicles, and Businesses
A beggar in Indore, India, has shocked authorities after it was discovered that he owns multiple houses, vehicles, and even businesses, media reports say.
The 50-year-old man, known only as Mangilal, suffers from leprosy and cannot walk. For years, he begged in Sarafa Bazaar, using a small wheeled platform to move around. His condition, including missing fingers, often drew sympathy from passersby who handed him cash.
As part of a drive to clear the streets of beggars, local officials brought Mangilal in for questioning. They were surprised to learn that he earned thousands of rupees daily from begging and even lent money to shop owners at interest.
Checks revealed that Mangilal owns three houses, including a three-storey building and a government-supported flat. He also has two auto-rickshaws he rents out and a car, for which he employs a driver earning 12,000 rupees (about $130) a month.
Mangilal told officials that the money from begging was not for survival but for investment. Authorities are now investigating whether he also holds bank accounts. Reports indicate that some of his family members were also involved in begging.
“I go there, but I don’t beg. People put money in my pocket or on the wooden board,” he explained.
