Tension in Kebbi as Thugs Attack Convoy of Buhari’s Ex-Minister, APC Responds

Tension rose in Birnin Kebbi on Monday after suspected thugs attacked the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami. The former minister, who now leads the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State, was said to be in the state capital on a condolence visit when the incident occurred.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers vandalised about 10 vehicles, leaving several of Malami’s supporters with injuries of varying degrees. Malami himself escaped unhurt.

Speaking after the incident, Malami alleged that the assault was politically motivated and claimed that the attackers emerged from the All Progressives Congress (APC) headquarters armed with dangerous weapons. “It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy. The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State there is no retreat, no surrender,” he said.

The APC in Kebbi has, however, denied involvement. In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, the party condemned the attack and insisted Kebbi remains a peaceful state. “No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,” Assalafy said.

He further alleged that security operatives attached to Malami’s convoy opened fire during the confrontation, an action he claimed escalated the violence.
