Tension at Interfaith Parley as Olubadan Snubs Alaafin in Public View

An unusual moment drew attention at the 2026 Interfaith Gathering held on Tuesday at the Secretariat’s Grand Space in Ibadan, when the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, did not return a greeting from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade.

The event, organised to promote peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding across Oyo State, was attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, senior government officials and community representatives.

Eyewitnesses said the Alaafin extended his hand to greet the Olubadan during the proceedings, but the gesture was not acknowledged. The Olubadan later exchanged greetings with Governor Seyi Makinde and other dignitaries before taking his seat.

The incident was observed by several attendees and later generated discussion among participants and members of the public. Opinions varied, with some describing the moment as regrettable, while others urged caution, noting that traditional customs and protocols differ among royal institutions.

Some commentators warned that such public exchanges, if not well understood, could shape perceptions about respect and conduct among traditional rulers at official events.

In his address at the gathering, Governor Makinde called on residents of the state to remain vigilant and actively involved in safeguarding their communities.

“Security is everybody’s business,” the governor said. “We must all stay alert and take responsibility for what happens around us. When you notice anything suspicious, report it promptly so action can be taken.”

He also urged public servants to uphold integrity and professionalism, stressing that public trust depends on their conduct.

“This administration will continue to invest in the safety of our people, strengthen our institutions and ensure that public service delivers real value to citizens,” Makinde said.
