Olubadan Coronation: Tinubu, Atiku, Governors Gather in Ibadan for Historic Ceremony

President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, governors, ministers, and other dignitaries are expected in Ibadan, Oyo State, today for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. The historic ceremony will take place at Mapo Hall and marks a significant moment in the cultural and political life of Ibadanland.

Chief Bayo Oyero, chairman of the Coronation Committee, confirmed at a press briefing at the Olubadan’s palace in Oke-Aremo that President Tinubu and other prominent figures would attend. He described the event as more than a coronation, emphasizing its importance in reaffirming Ibadan’s unique chieftaincy system and its orderly, democratic succession process. Oyero noted that Ladoja’s long journey to the throne reflects the wisdom of Ibadan’s ancestors and that his experience as a former senator and governor equips him with a deep understanding of grassroots governance.

Oba Ladoja ascends the throne following the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, who reigned for one year. His nomination as Olubadan-designate received formal approval from Governor Seyi Makinde, paving the way for today’s ceremony.

Governor Makinde, who had been on vacation, cut short his leave to participate in and oversee the coronation. The Oyo State House of Assembly approved his early resumption, with members praising his commitment to preserving the state’s cultural heritage.

In preparation for the event, the Oyo State Police Command announced extensive security measures. Spokesman Adewale Osifeso said the operation involves intelligence-driven patrols, surveillance, and stop-and-search procedures across the state, with special attention to entry and exit points, public spaces, and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport. Roads around Mapo Hall will be closed from 7 a.m., and the public has been advised to plan alternative routes. The police also issued a warning against public disorder and urged citizens to report suspicious activities to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration.
