Sheikh Gumi Warns: Recent Terrorist Attack Just the Beginning Without Government-Bandit Negotiations
In a recent interview with AriseNews TV, prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi emphasized that the ongoing military offensive against terrorists in Nigeria has exacerbated the situation, leading to heightened violence against abducted Nigerians. Gumi insisted that the Nigerian government should adopt a strategy of negotiation, drawing parallels to successful dialogue efforts by the United States with the Taliban.
Gumi highlighted the consequences of relentless military attacks, stating, “This thing (banditry) is turning into something else. We are turning them into monsters, more monsters than they are.” He expressed concern over the lack of empathy exhibited by the bandits towards their victims, attributing it to the harsh treatment they receive from security forces.
Arguing against a solely military approach, Gumi stressed the need for comprehensive solutions involving effective policing, intelligence gathering, and social programs. He cautioned against burdening the military with civilian insurgency issues, advocating instead for a more nuanced approach involving political and law enforcement efforts.
Addressing the issue of ransom payments, Gumi suggested engaging with the bandits to provide them with hope and alternatives, while cautioning against viewing the conflict solely through the lens of criminality. He urged a holistic approach to address the underlying ethnic and class tensions fueling the violence.
Drawing on international examples, Gumi highlighted the potential for negotiation, citing instances of prisoner exchanges between Israel and Hamas, as well as dialogue between the US and Taliban. He called for a departure from rigid stances, emphasizing the need for pragmatic engagement to address the root causes of the conflict.
In conclusion, Gumi urged the Nigerian government to reconsider its approach to insecurity, advocating for dialogue and engagement with bandits as a crucial step towards restoring peace and stability in the country.
