Olubadan of Ibadanland Passes Away at 81

The revered Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, has passed away after a brief illness at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and accomplishment.

According to reports, Oba Balogun, who had been in good health, was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning after experiencing slight malaria fever. Despite receiving guests just a day prior to his hospitalization, his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing.

The announcement of his demise was made by Dr. Kola Balogun, the Baba-Kekere Olubadan and younger brother of the late monarch, through a statement released by the Personal Assistant (Media) to Oba Balogun, Oladele Ogunsola.

It has been disclosed that the late Olubadan will be laid to rest at his Aliiwo ancestral home in accordance with Islamic rites, with the burial scheduled for Friday at 4:00 pm. The State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has been informed of the monarch’s passing and is expected to be formally notified.

Oba Balogun, who was the first highly educated individual to ascend to the throne of Ibadan, held numerous prestigious positions throughout his lifetime, including a British-trained Ph.D. holder, former university lecturer, and former senator. He was known for his contributions to academia, business, and politics.

His passing comes shortly after his last official engagement, where decisions regarding the Olubadan Advisory Council were made. Despite his illness, he remained committed to his duties and responsibilities until the end.

Governor Makinde, in a statement expressing his condolences, described Oba Balogun as an epitome of royal excellence and a great achiever who left an indelible mark on Ibadanland during his brief reign of just over two years.

The Governor extended his sympathies to the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland, praying for the peaceful repose of the late monarch’s soul.

As the city mourns the loss of a beloved leader, tributes continue to pour in for Oba Lekan Balogun, whose contributions to Ibadanland will be remembered for generations to come.
