Senators Join LP Leaders in Benin, Demanding Answers on Abure’s Arrest
In a swift response to the arrest of the Labour Party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, a delegation of party leaders and senators arrived in Benin on Wednesday. Abure had been apprehended by Police operatives of Zone 5 Benin on charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, and other related offenses.
LP’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, addressed the media during a visit to the police facility, expressing the party’s concern and seeking clarification on the circumstances leading to Abure’s arrest.
“I have just arrived from Abuja. When I came in, I learnt that our national chairman had been arrested. We came to the Force Headquarters to find out the reason for his arrest,” Farouk stated.
Accompanied by members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and distinguished senators, Farouk emphasized their intention to await official clearance. Tijani Momoh, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force Zone 5, confirmed Abure’s arrest, revealing that he and four others were taken into custody based on a petition, the petitioner’s identity undisclosed.
Farouk disclosed, “It has to do with a written petition that was endorsed by the AIG Zone 5 from the office of the Inspector General of Police.”
