Security Forces Raid Gunmen, Kidnappers’ Hideout in Anambra, Scores Feared Dead
Security operatives in Anambra State launched a major raid on a suspected hideout of gunmen and kidnappers, leaving scores feared dead. The operation, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s security outfit, Agunechemba, took place around 1 a.m. on Thursday at Enugu-Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area.
Many of the hoodlums reportedly fled with injuries as security forces overran their base, recovering a cache of weapons and other items. Among the seized weapons were two AK-47 rifles, eight pump-action guns, four locally made pistols, three packets of cartridges containing 101 rounds, four empty AK-47 magazines, three cutlasses, a Baofeng radio, a motorcycle, and several charms.
The raid was carried out by Agunechemba troops in collaboration with the police, Department of State Services (DSS), military, and other security agencies. According to sources, the operation was based on intelligence reports, and at least one gunman was arrested.
Since the launch of Agunechemba—modeled after the notorious Bakassi Boys of the late Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju’s era—six criminal camps have reportedly been dismantled across the state. Anambra has faced persistent security challenges, with numerous cases of killings and kidnappings.
Efforts to reach Anambra police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga for confirmation were unsuccessful. However, a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the operation and emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring security in the state.
“Anambra must be free again. The governor has given us the mandate to secure the state, and that’s what we’re doing. These criminals must bow,” the officer stated.
