Father Kills Daughter for Uploading Videos on TikTok
A U.S.-born teenage girl was killed by her father in Quetta, Pakistan, after she refused to stop posting videos on TikTok, police said on Thursday. Authorities have classified the case as an “honor killing,” a crime that remains prevalent in parts of Pakistan despite legal reforms.
The father, reportedly in his 50s, had recently relocated his family from the United States to Pakistan. According to local police chief Babar Baloch, he confessed to shooting his daughter earlier this week after she refused to dress more modestly and continued uploading videos that the family deemed inappropriate.
Honor killings remain a significant issue in Pakistan, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) estimating that around 1,000 women are murdered annually by close relatives under the pretext of protecting family honor. Many perpetrators evade justice due to a legal provision allowing victims’ families to forgive the offender. While Pakistan introduced reforms in 2016 to limit this loophole, rights groups, including Amnesty International, argue that these measures have not been sufficient to curb the practice.
