Security Checkpoints, Roadblocks Elicit Frustration Among South-East Commuters
Motorists in the South-East region of Nigeria are expressing growing discontent over the proliferation of security checkpoints, with complaints ranging from unnecessary delays to alleged extortion by security personnel.
Mr. Kelechi Okoro, a driver with a transport company, voiced his concerns about the challenging conditions faced by drivers due to the substantial presence of military and police operatives. Okoro highlighted that checkpoints often lead to traffic congestion, attributing it to both the frequency and conduct of security checks along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
A recent firsthand experience by a reporter from SK Blog revealed an astonishing number of checkpoints within a short stretch of less than four kilometers, with multiple security agencies involved, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), navy, and mobile police. This situation persists for about 50 kilometers from Awka to Enugu, significantly impacting the flow of traffic.
While the heightened security measures could be linked to the prevailing insecurity in the South-East, commuters argue that the attitude of security personnel exacerbates the situation. Instances of traffic jams caused by a cascade of checkpoints were observed, leading to frustration among travelers.
Passengers, including Mr. Celestine Ugwunnwa, criticized the recurrent stops, emphasizing the discomfort faced by passengers and the inability of drivers to maintain a consistent speed. Ugwunnwa questioned the effectiveness of such policing methods and suggested exploring alternative strategies to address security concerns in the region.
The sentiments expressed by the public echo previous clashes between security forces and government officials, such as the incident involving Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachi Ibezim, who ordered the removal of roadblocks during the holiday season in 2022.
As the festive season approaches, concerns rise about potential increased checkpoints and the impact on the free flow of traffic. Many residents question the efficacy of the current security tactics and call for a reconsideration of approaches that do not solely rely on frequent roadblocks, seen by some as punitive rather than protective measures.
The South-East region remains a focal point for discussions on balancing security measures with the convenience of daily life, prompting a reassessment of strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and commuters.
