SASA detains three over alleged extortion in Anambra

Authorities in Onitsha and surrounding areas have arrested three individuals over alleged involvement in illegal revenue collection and extortion, according to the Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) in Anambra State.

SASA spokesperson Karen James said the suspects—Michael Uwaoma, Ndubuisi Aniukwu, and Anthony Onyekwelu—were apprehended during separate operations targeting unauthorised levy collection points.

Uwaoma was reportedly arrested at Mgbuka Obosi for allegedly collecting levies from food vendors, while Aniukwu was picked up at Umusiome Junction in Nkpor over claims of extorting commercial motorcycle operators. Investigators said initial findings suggest Aniukwu acted on instructions from Onyekwelu, who allegedly set daily remittance targets.

The suspects have been arraigned before a magistrate’s court and remanded in a correctional facility pending the outcome of the case. The court granted bail under conditions that include a financial bond and a verified civil servant as surety.

The matter has been adjourned until June 3, 2026, for further hearing.

SASA said the arrests form part of its ongoing enforcement against unauthorised revenue collection and harassment of traders. The agency urged residents and business operators to report similar incidents to the appropriate authorities.
