Cleric Says ‘Devil Responsible’ as He Is Arrested Over Alleged R@pe of Minor in Anambra

A cleric based in Anambra State, Favour Ezani, has been arrested over allegations of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl during a so-called deliverance session.

Ezani, identified as the general overseer of a Pentecostal church, was apprehended by the Special Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) at his residence in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area.

Authorities said the arrest followed a report filed by a security operative from a nearby community. The case is now under investigation, and the suspect remains in custody.

According to SASA spokesperson Karen James, the teenager was taken to the cleric by her aunt for what was described as a special spiritual exercise. Concerns were raised after the girl was later found to be pregnant. When questioned, she identified the cleric as responsible.

A video circulating online reportedly shows the suspect admitting involvement. In the footage, he claimed he administered a mixture of bitter leaf and other herbal substances in an attempt to terminate the pregnancy and avoid detection. He also reportedly appealed for leniency and offered to cover medical expenses.

The victim stated that the abuse began in November 2025 shortly after she arrived at the cleric’s residence. She alleged repeated assaults and threats intended to prevent her from speaking out.

She further claimed that substances given to her to terminate the pregnancy have resulted in ongoing health complications.

The teenager has called on the state government, civil society organisations, and concerned individuals to assist her in accessing proper medical care.
