Rivers PDP Crisis: Pro-Wike Group Conducts Congress Across 319 Wards Despite Court Order
Members loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have proceeded with congresses across all 319 wards in Rivers State. This action persists despite numerous court orders arising from the proposed state and ward congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, amidst ongoing political tensions between Governor Sim Fubara and Minister Nyesom Wike.
Over the past three months, Rivers State has seen more than ten court cases and orders from various courts, with most questioning the legitimacy of the caretaker committee of the PDP in the state. In the midst of this legal battle, the faction loyal to Minister Wike has remained steadfast in their efforts to secure control of the party’s structure ahead of the national convention.
This determination was highlighted by the conduct of the ward congresses, which were supervised by delegates from the National Secretariat of the PDP and officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The congresses occurred shortly after conflicting court orders were issued. One court barred the Rivers PDP from proceeding with the congresses, while another court approved their conduct, reflecting the deep divisions and ongoing power struggle within the party.
