“Rivers LG Polls Will Proceed as Scheduled” — Gov. Fubara
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has confirmed that the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to assess its readiness, Governor Fubara emphasized that the commission has received a court order mandating the election to take place. He assured that his administration would provide full support to ensure a smooth and peaceful voting process.
Governor Fubara was welcomed at RSIEC headquarters by the commission’s chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli. The governor’s visit was aimed at ensuring that the electoral body is fully prepared for the upcoming elections.
This comes despite a ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja, which previously barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing voter registers to RSIEC. The court argued that RSIEC had set the October 5 date without fully complying with all relevant legal requirements.
Governor Fubara urged RSIEC to ensure the election is free, fair, and credible. He also called on the people of Rivers State to participate actively by voting for candidates of their choice, stating that the election could mark a new chapter for the state.
