Independence Day: “Nigeria on the Brink of a One-Party Dictatorship”, Atiku Warns
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stark warning regarding the future of democracy in Nigeria as the nation celebrates its 64th Independence Day. In a press statement released on Monday, Atiku congratulated Nigerians while urging collective action to safeguard the democratic principles envisioned by the country’s founders.
Atiku emphasized that this anniversary should not merely be a celebration but a tribute to the resilience and determination of Nigerians who remain hopeful for their country’s potential. “Our nation has traversed numerous tumultuous phases,” he stated. “Yet, the tenacity of patriotic citizens, supported by our international allies, has fortified our resolve as a resilient entity.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, he noted, “As we mark 64 years of nationhood, we take pride in the enduring establishment of democracy in Nigeria, underscored by the longest period of democratic governance in our history.” However, he also pointed out significant shortcomings, asserting that the nation has yet to achieve satisfactory progress in political inclusivity and ensuring genuinely free and fair elections.
Atiku called on political leaders to unite in a concerted effort to protect Nigeria’s democracy from the threats of authoritarianism. He remarked, “Our founding fathers united under a common cause, championing our independence through peaceful political activism. What we celebrate today is the fruition of their collective endeavors and those of subsequent generations.”
The former Vice President expressed deep concern about the current political landscape, describing it as increasingly corrosive. He stated, “Our political milieu has become corrosive; opposition parties languish in weakness, while the ruling party appears to manipulate internal processes to render them ineffectual. Nigeria teeters on the brink of a one-party dictatorship.”
In a passionate appeal, Atiku urged political leaders across all parties to forge a robust coalition that can provide a credible opposition and guide the nation toward a promising future.
