ADC Primaries: “We Will Aim at Consensus; If It Fails, We Move to an Election” — Atiku
Atiku Abubakar says the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first attempt to agree on a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, with primaries as a fallback if negotiations break down.
Speaking on a Prime Time programme on Arise TV on Wednesday, the former vice president outlined the party’s approach to selecting its flag bearer. He said party leaders are focused on avoiding internal disputes by prioritising consensus.
According to him, consultations among stakeholders are ongoing, and there is confidence that an agreement can be reached without escalating tensions.
He added that party members share a common objective of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic system, expressing optimism that disagreements would be resolved internally.
Atiku also reiterated his commitment to the outcome of whichever process produces the party’s candidate. He said he is prepared to step aside for any aspirant who emerges, including Peter Obi.
His comments come amid ongoing political realignments within opposition circles as parties begin early positioning for the next election cycle.
