Rivers Govt Explains N100,000 Christmas Bonus for State Workers, Including Lawmakers
The Rivers State Government has clarified that its annual N100,000 Christmas bonus is paid to all state workers, including civil servants, public office holders, and lawmakers, without discrimination.
In a statement signed by Dr. Honour Sirawoo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, the government confirmed that the bonus is disbursed to everyone listed on the state payroll, including pensioners. The clarification comes after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) commended the state for timely payment of the bonus.
While the statement did not single out members of the State House of Assembly, reports indicate that the Assembly returned the bonus to the state treasury.
Sirawoo said the N100,000 bonus has been paid consistently for the past three years and described it as a gesture of appreciation for the dedication and service of state employees.
He further emphasized Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s commitment to policies that provide social support and welfare for workers and their families. The government regards the NLC not just as a labour union, but as a key partner in its “Rivers First” development agenda.
“While this bonus is meant to brighten the festive season, our long-term focus remains the continuous improvement of the working environment and the welfare of everyone serving Rivers State,” Sirawoo added, noting that workers are the state government’s greatest pride.
