Rivers Crisis: Wike, PDP Governors Poised for Showdown at High-Stakes NWC Meeting

A potential conflict is brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its Governors Forum appears set for a confrontation with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, during the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The roots of the discord trace back to Rivers State, where a political feud between Wike and the current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, both PDP members, has caused significant disruptions. The fallout has led to a split in the state House of Assembly, with factions aligned either with Wike or Fubara, further deepening the crisis.

Despite various mediation efforts by President Bola Tinubu and other key figures, the situation remains unresolved, with legal battles raging in courts in Port Harcourt and Abuja. The conflict escalated when the PDP, under the leadership of Acting National Chairman Amb Umar Damagum, went ahead with congresses in Rivers State, effectively granting control of the party’s state structure to Wike, despite a court injunction against such actions.

This move has drawn sharp criticism from key party members, including former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South leader, Chief Edwin Clark, who accused Wike of leveraging his relationship with President Tinubu to exert undue pressure on Fubara and the PDP.

The PDP Governors Forum has publicly thrown its support behind Governor Fubara, urging the NWC to recognize him as the legitimate leader of the party in Rivers State. However, Wike has remained defiant, threatening to destabilize PDP-controlled states whose governors oppose him.

The NWC meeting, set to take place at Wadata Plaza, the PDP national headquarters in Abuja, is expected to be a critical moment in resolving this intra-party conflict. Party insiders suggest that the governors will present their unified position on Rivers State during the meeting, potentially leading to a significant confrontation with Wike.

The situation is further complicated by internal divisions within the NWC itself. While some members, including Damagum, supported the controversial Rivers congress, others, such as the National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade and the National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, have called for adherence to legal and procedural norms, particularly in support of Governor Fubara.

As the meeting approaches, the outcome remains uncertain, with the possibility of a no-confidence vote against Damagum being floated by some party members. The PDP’s internal struggle comes at a critical time as the party attempts to position itself as a viable alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the next electoral cycle.
