Rivers Crisis: Wike Disadvantaged in Feud with Fubara, Says Analyst

Amidst the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, an apolitical analyst and Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, has shed light on the precarious position of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in his ongoing feud with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking in an interview on Arise News TV, Ikechukwu emphasized the strategic disadvantage faced by Wike, attributing it to his limited power and financial control, coupled with his physical distance from Rivers State. In contrast, Fubara holds the upper hand with his proximity, presence, and financial control over the state.

The rift between the two political figures, according to Ikechukwu, stems from disagreements over governance and control, exacerbated by Wike’s decision to challenge someone who was previously his accountant general. This move, Ikechukwu argues, was unwise, as Fubara holds intimate knowledge of the state’s financial dealings, thus exposing potential vulnerabilities.

Furthermore, Ikechukwu highlighted the intricacies of power dynamics in politics, emphasizing the distinction between being in power and merely holding office. He pointed out that Wike’s transition from governor to minister has significantly curtailed his influence and discretion, rendering him reliant on the Presidency and distant from the affairs of Rivers State.

In contrast, Fubara, armed with proximity and financial resources, has maneuvered to strengthen his position, exploiting the discord between the two parties to his advantage. Ikechukwu warned that the gloves are off in this political tussle, with Fubara poised to deliver decisive blows as he consolidates his grip on power in Rivers State.
