Rivers: ‘Call Governor Fubara to Order’ Pro-Wike Lawmakers Appeal to President Tinubu

The Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers Assembly convened on Friday at the House of Assembly quarters along Aba Road to voice their concerns over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alleged anti-democratic actions.

The assembly, through a statement by Amaewhule’s Media Aide, Martin Wachukwu, highlighted various grievances, including plans to demolish the recently constructed Assembly Quarters and a series of what they termed as tyrannical actions. Majority Leader Major Jack accused Fubara of orchestrating the burning of the Hallowed Chamber, the demolition of the Assembly Complex, and attacks on the Speaker’s official residence, among others.

Amaewhule condemned Fubara’s conduct, describing it as dictatorial and urging the President and the people of Rivers State to intervene. He emphasized the importance of upholding the independence of the three arms of government as enshrined in the Constitution.

The Assembly further resolved to reach out to international bodies such as the British High Commission, the American Embassy, the European Union, and the United Nations to raise awareness of Fubara’s alleged tyrannical behavior towards the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Additionally, members of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Rivers State chapter, led by Port Harcourt City Council Chairman Allwell Nwunwor, addressed the House Committee on Local Government. They lamented the Governor’s withholding of monthly allocations, which they argued had led to increased crime due to insufficient funds for security measures.

Amaewhule emphasized that the Governor’s actions contravened the Constitution and the Rivers State Local Government Law of 2024, stressing the need to safeguard democratic principles.

In response, the House resolved to take decisive steps to ensure the release of seized funds, including issuing directives to banks not to transact on behalf of Local Government Councils without the authorization of the Council Chairmen.
