JUST IN: Police Take Control of Rivers House of Assembly Quarters

Armed policemen have assumed control of all entrances to the House of Assembly quarters along the Aba Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Approximately 30 patrol vans were deployed to block access to the lawmakers’ estate, effectively sealing it off.

This development follows allegations by the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly that Governor Siminalayi Fubara was planning to demolish the quarters, sparked by the governor’s recent unannounced visit to the facility. Governor Fubara clarified that his visit was merely to inspect the estate and ensure its upkeep.

In response to the heightened tensions, stakeholders, including the pro-Fubara faction, have called for police neutrality and professionalism in handling the situation. The Sim Media Volunteers (SMV) specifically urged the Inspector-General of Police to oversee the conduct of officers and prevent any undue harassment or arrests, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order.

Despite the unrest, supporters of Governor Fubara have rallied behind him, commending his commitment to democracy and development in Rivers State. Frank Kilsi, convener of the SMV, lauded the governor’s achievements in various sectors, including economic growth, infrastructure, and social welfare.

The factional Speaker, Victor Oko-Jumbo, and Leader, Sokari Goodboy, have also received backing from Kilsi and other youth groups, signaling a unified stance in support of the governor’s administration.
