Rivers Assembly Accuses Governor Fubara of Tyranny in Recent Appointments
The Rivers State House of Assembly has accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of engaging in illegitimate activities concerning his recent appointments. The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, boldly leveled this accusation during a crucial plenary session on Monday at the Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
The assembly members, who had recently overridden the governor and enacted four laws in their last sitting, convened for an unscheduled plenary to address the escalating concerns. Major Jack, the Majority Leader of the House, brought attention to the governor’s recent appointments to head key government parastatals, including the Local Government Service Commission, Bureau of Public Procurement, and New City Development Authority.
Speaker Amaewhule clarified that the mode of appointments stipulated by law did not include provisions for acting chairmen, raising questions about the legality of Governor Fubara’s actions. Furthermore, a debate ensued among the lawmakers, with some expressing doubts about the legal existence of the New City Development Authority.
Accusing the governor of tyranny, the Speaker announced the House’s resolution to draft a letter warning Governor Fubara against his perceived misconduct. This development has sparked speculation about whether the Assembly will resume its previously halted impeachment proceedings against the governor, adding a layer of uncertainty to the political landscape in Rivers State.
