Rising Tensions in South-East as Communities Contest Alleged RUGA Plans

Tensions are escalating in some Igbo communities of the South-East region, as residents voice their opposition to what they perceive as plans for RUGA settlements. In Nimbo, Uzo Uwani Council Area of Enugu State, and Aro-Ngwa in Abia State, protests have erupted, with residents fearing the establishment of RUGA in their areas.

The Nimbo community in Enugu State has been particularly vocal, expressing concerns about the potential settlement and its impact on their lives. Similar sentiments have been echoed by the Aro-Ngwa people in Abia State, who reject the idea, citing potential threats to their safety.

Eze Philip Ajomiwe, a prominent monarch in Abia State and renowned cassava farmer, dismissed the idea of RUGA in the South-East. He emphasized the need for land for agriculture and criticized any move towards RUGA, suggesting that governors should focus on encouraging farming practices reminiscent of the days of Dr. Michael Okpara.

Professor Obasi Igwe, a political science expert, condemned any attempts to establish RUGA or cattle settlements, labeling them as deliberate provocations. He urged against ceding land for such purposes, emphasizing the importance of modern ranching techniques over outdated RUGA settlements.

The Coalition of South-East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) spoke out against RUGA, asserting that there is no land available for such settlements in the South-East. COSEYL’s National President, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, argued that donating land for RUGA would invite insecurity, anarchy, and further endanger indigenous lives.

Political leader Dr. John Nwokeabia and Chief Johnson Okolo emphasized the necessity for effective communication and stakeholder engagement. Dr. Nwokeabia urged Governor Mba’s administration to temporarily suspend the RUGA project in Uzo-Uwani, considering the historical security concerns in the region.

Abia State Government denied any plans for RUGA at Aro-Ngwa, clarifying that a trailer park, not a settlement, was being constructed in collaboration with the Federal Government. Similarly, the Enugu State Government refuted claims of RUGA plans in Nimbo, emphasizing their intention to establish modern ranches to enhance agro-industrial productivity and curb criminal activities.
