President Tinubu Directs Settlement of N342 Million Aso Rock Villa Electricity Debt

President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive for the immediate settlement of the electricity bills owed by the State House, Aso Rock, to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC). The announcement came through a press statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.

Contrary to the initial claim by AEDC in a paid advertorial, President Tinubu clarified that the total electricity debt owed by the State House is N342,352,217.46. This figure was revealed through a letter from the AEDC management to the State House Permanent Secretary dated February 14, 2024.

The directive follows a thorough reconciliation of accounts between the State House Management and AEDC. Chief of Staff to the President, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has provided assurance that the debt will be settled before the end of this week.

President Tinubu’s administration emphasizes transparency and accountability, urging other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to follow suit by reconciling their accounts with AEDC and promptly settling outstanding electricity bills.

Earlier, SK Blog had reported on AEDC’s threat to disconnect electricity supply to the Presidential Villa and MDAs due to a total debt of N47.1 billion. The company cited an outstanding debt of N923,873,150 from the Presidential Villa alone. MDAs were given a 10-day ultimatum to comply with payment or face disconnection and potential blackout starting February 28, 2024. The publication of these debts is seen as a measure to ensure accountability for long-overdue services rendered.
