Residents Forced to Flee Homes Amidst Alleged Pollution from Rice Mill in Anambra
Alarming reports of pollution emanating from a rice mill factory nestled within the community of Ngo Ndam, Nnobi, in the Idemili South local government area of Anambra State, have spurred residents to evacuate their homes.
Chief Emeka Agbanari, the owner of Seaman Rice Mill, attempted to assuage concerns, asserting ongoing efforts to resolve the issue with community leaders, reassuring the public that there is “no cause for alarm.”
According to Mr. John Enwedo, a spokesman for the affected families, the distressing situation unfolded gradually. Residents were caught off guard when the factory commenced operations, emitting dense, dark smoke that blanketed the vicinity. This noxious pollution has triggered health issues among residents, including eye irritation, skin rashes, and exacerbated ailments among the elderly.
Complaints lodged with community leaders, including Webster Okonkwo, have yielded little recourse, leaving residents feeling abandoned and desperate for governmental intervention. Many have resorted to fleeing their homes, unable to endure the relentless noise and hazardous conditions generated by the factory’s ceaseless operation.
Despite assurances from Chief Agbanari that corrective measures are underway, grievances persist. The malfunctioning smoke tower remains a focal point of concern, with residents fearing prolonged exposure to harmful emissions.
Anambra’s Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odumegwu, disclosed that his ministry dispatched a technical team to assess the situation following community petitions. The findings of this assessment are eagerly anticipated.
Meanwhile, agricultural experts, including Mr. Emma Okafor, warn of dire ecological repercussions. The pervasive smoke inhibits photosynthesis, jeopardizing the area’s agricultural viability and exacerbating the plight of already beleaguered residents.
