Residents Flee Zamfara Communities Amid Bandits’ Threats: Operation Hadarin Daji Forces Action
Residents of 10 communities in Bungudu Local Government Area, Zamfara State, have evacuated their homes in response to threats from notorious bandit leader Dan Nagala. The exodus follows a recent military operation by soldiers from the Operation Hadarin Daji unit, targeting the Danbasa-Buzaya forest, a known hideout for bandits.
The soldiers successfully recovered a substantial number of allegedly stolen cows, believed to be under the control of Dan Nagala. It was revealed that the cows were being safeguarded by another bandit, Zakiru, who fled upon learning of the impending military intervention.
Concerned residents disclosed that Dan Nagala had issued warnings after a prior recovery operation, vowing to attack villages sharing borders with the forest if soldiers returned for the cattle. Fearing reprisals, residents fled their homes, emphasizing the ruthless nature of Dan Nagala and his disregard for human life.
A resident of Gidan Soro, speaking anonymously, shared the prevailing sense of fear, stating, “We ran for our dear lives because the notorious bandits’ leader can attack our villages if something is not done.” Another resident from Dan Gamji expressed distress about the uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of family members.
These developments have sparked urgent appeals to both state and federal governments for immediate intervention to ensure the safety of residents. The residents argue that the military, having recovered the stolen cattle, should provide ongoing protection against potential bandit attacks.
Malam Isyaku, a resident of Dan Katsina, voiced concerns about potential conflicts arising from the recovery of the stolen cows. He suggested that the military should either station forces in the villages for ongoing security or refrain from actions that might escalate tensions with the bandits.
In response to inquiries, Captain Ibrahim Yahaya, the spokesperson for Operation Hadarin Daji, cited ongoing clearance operations as the reason for being unable to provide comments at that time.
The situation in Zamfara State reflects a troubling trend, with multiple communities facing attacks by armed bandits over the past four months. The recent abduction of nearly 50 villagers in Magizawa village and previous incidents underscore the pressing need for comprehensive measures to address the escalating security challenges in the country.
