“Rather Than Offering Protection, They Have Become a New Source of Fear” — Peter Obi Reacts to Onitsha Market Shootings
Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi has reacted to the tragic killing of traders in Onitsha Main Market, describing the incident as “deeply troubling” and calling for urgent reforms of state-backed security outfits. Obi made the remarks in a post on his verified X account.
In the post, Obi criticized state-backed security groups, noting that instead of protecting citizens, some have worsened the plight of already vulnerable communities. He specifically highlighted the recent shooting that claimed the lives of several traders, including a pregnant woman, saying the incident underscores the need for thorough scrutiny, proper reorganisation, and strict accountability of such outfits.
Obi recalled a previous case involving the Udo Ga-Achi Security Outfit, which he said had brutally assaulted a youth corper, warning that repeated lapses in oversight are allowing state-supported groups to operate outside the law. He called for careful vetting, training, and monitoring of security agencies and community outfits to ensure professionalism and prevent abuses.
Expressing sympathy for the families of the victims, Obi said, “May they find strength and comfort and may the departed rest in peace,” emphasizing that security structures must prioritize protecting lives rather than becoming a source of fear.
The post adds to growing public concern over security operations in Anambra State and the need for accountability in state-backed enforcement agencies.
