Pressure Mounts on EFCC to Release Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Following Negotiations with Tinubu Camp

There is growing pressure on Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello after his interrogation on Wednesday. The ex-governor, who has been under investigation for alleged money laundering and corruption involving N80.2 billion, finally appeared before the EFCC following a series of negotiations between his camp and that of President Bola Tinubu.

According to sources, the arrangement for Bello’s appearance was part of a broader political negotiation, as President Tinubu seeks to reinforce his administration’s commitment to tackling corruption. Bello had previously avoided multiple invitations from the EFCC, prompting a warrant for his arrest. His resistance to arrest, which included seeking refuge at his residence in Abuja and hiding in Kogi State government buildings, led to heightened tensions between him and the anti-graft agency.

Bello’s media office released a statement following his appearance, explaining that he decided to honor the EFCC’s invitation after consulting with his family, legal team, and political allies. The former governor maintained that he has “nothing to hide” and that his decision was made to ensure the protection of his fundamental rights.

Despite today’s development, sources indicate that Bello’s release is imminent, with pressure on the EFCC from various quarters, including the Inspector General of Police. Concerns about recent earth tremors in Abuja have also reportedly been cited as a reason for avoiding his detention. The agency is expected to argue that his detention is unnecessary for now, though the 19-count charges against him—ranging from money laundering to criminal diversion—remain active. His trial is scheduled to resume on September 25.

Bello’s case has drawn significant attention due to his political stature and the involvement of key figures, including his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, who reportedly intervened during a previous attempt to arrest him in Abuja.

The EFCC, led by its chairman Ola Olukoyede, has expressed a strong desire to prosecute the former governor. The commission accuses Bello of converting over N80 billion in state funds for personal use during his tenure as governor, charges he has denied.

This high-profile case is seen as a key test of the Tinubu administration’s anti-corruption agenda, as it attempts to balance political interests with a commitment to justice. The public awaits further developments as the situation continues to unfold.
