Presidential Candidate Peter Obi, Presidency Clash Over Supreme Court Verdict

In a contentious exchange of words, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and the Presidency have engaged in a heated dispute over the recent Supreme Court judgment that upheld President Bola Tinubu’s election victory. Obi expressed his disappointment in the verdict, while the Presidency criticized his claims and accused him of being a “copycat.”

Peter Obi, in a press conference held in Abuja on Monday, voiced his deep dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s judgment delivered on October 26. He asserted that the court’s decision appeared to prioritize technicalities over the substance of the case, eroding the trust of Nigerians in the judicial system. Obi emphasized, “The Supreme Court exhibited a disturbing aversion to public opinion and abandoned its responsibility as a court of law and policy. This judgment contradicts the overwhelming evidence of election irregularities, technical glitches, non-compliance with INEC’s rules, as well as allegations of perjury, identity theft, and forgery brought to light during this election matter.”

Obi went further to state that the Supreme Court’s decision condoned breaches of the constitution related to the qualifications and parameters for presidential candidates, placing a moral burden on the nation’s conscience. He expressed concerns that the ruling was not aligned with the demand for substantive justice in the present climate.

Furthermore, Obi alluded to the valedictory remarks by Hon. Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad, which he believed shed light on the rationale and premise of the Supreme Court’s judgment.

In response to the verdict, Obi declared that the Labour Party and the Obidient Movement would transition into the opposition and expand their message of hope to resonate with people across the nation. They committed to focusing on good governance, national unity, and the protection of civil liberties while vying in future elections to elect leaders who share their vision of a new Nigeria.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, promptly responded to Obi’s statements, labeling him a “copycat” who attempted to mislead the public with false claims and innuendos. Onanuga argued that Obi had benefited from judicial pronouncements in the past but was now criticizing the same court because its judgment did not favor him. He emphasized that judicial decisions are based on evidence, precedents, and the rule of law, not public opinion or mob sentiments.

Onanuga also questioned Obi’s ability to lead the country, citing his tenure as Governor of Anambra and the lack of substantial achievements. He called on Obi to support President Tinubu’s leadership and suggested that he should seek another vocation, having been rejected by the majority of Nigerians in the last election.

In conclusion, the Presidency welcomed Obi and his party to the role of opposition and urged them to campaign on issues rather than resorting to religious and ethnic sentiments in future elections. The political standoff between Peter Obi and the Presidency highlights the ongoing tensions and divisions in Nigerian politics.
