President Abbas Denounces Hamas: “You Don’t Represent Palestinian People”
In a recent phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made a significant declaration, disavowing the actions and policies of Hamas, stating that they do not accurately represent the aspirations and interests of the Palestinian people. The announcement came as tensions escalate in the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict, which has claimed the lives of numerous civilians on both sides.
President Abbas, who has held his position since 2005, is affiliated with the Fatah political party, a faction with a longstanding and bitter rivalry with Hamas. In his conversation with President Maduro, Abbas explicitly voiced his rejection of the killing of civilians by any party involved and called for the immediate release of civilians, prisoners, and detainees held on both sides of the conflict.
The situation in the region has become increasingly dire, with the recent surprise attack by Hamas on Israel resulting in the loss of over 1,400 Israeli lives. In response, Israel has carried out a series of bombing campaigns in Gaza, resulting in more than 2,500 fatalities among the Palestinian population.
As the crisis intensifies, Israeli troops have been amassing near Gaza in preparation for a possible ground offensive aimed at targeting Hamas militants. This escalating violence has forced Israel to issue an evacuation order to 1.1 million Palestinians living in the northern region of Gaza, urging them to move south. Hundreds of thousands have heeded this call, causing a sudden and dramatic doubling of the population of the southern city of Khan Younis overnight, according to reports by the BBC.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with shortages of essential resources such as water, food, power, and medicines exacerbating the suffering of the population. The United Nations has issued a stark warning, describing the Middle East as being “on the verge of the abyss” and calling on Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian aid to alleviate the dire conditions faced by the people of Gaza.
As the Israeli-Hamas conflict continues to escalate, President Abbas’s disavowal of Hamas underscores the complexity and gravity of the situation, with the international community closely monitoring developments and calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent further loss of life and human suffering.
