Police Officer Kills Colleague, Injures Another in Rivers State
A police inspector has been arrested in Rivers State after allegedly shooting and killing a colleague and injuring another officer during a duty assignment in Port Harcourt.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that Inspector Victor Okus, attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force and deployed on special duty at Intels Logistics Company, Onne, is in custody over the incident.
In a statement issued on Monday in Port Harcourt, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the shooting occurred on January 18 at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket in the Trans Amadi area of the city.
According to the police, the officers who were shot were members of the 14 Police Mobile Force, Yola, and were on joint guard duty with military personnel at the location when the incident happened.
Preliminary findings indicate that Inspector Okus allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, hitting them in the head and neck. The injured officers were taken to hospital for treatment, where one of them, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, later died from his injuries.
Iringe-Koko said the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary for autopsy, while the second officer, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, is receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
She added that the suspect will undergo an orderly room trial to determine the circumstances and motive behind the shooting and will be charged to court if found culpable.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full investigation into the incident. He also urged officers handling firearms to exercise restraint and responsibility, stressing the need to protect both colleagues and members of the public at all times.
