Police Arrest Seven for Robbing, Killing Two Uber Drivers in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended seven suspects for their alleged involvement in the robbery and murder of two Uber drivers in the Lekki and Ajah areas of Lagos. The state Commissioner of Police, Olarenwaju Ishola, disclosed this development during a press briefing on Saturday, where he highlighted the command’s recent achievements.
According to the police, the arrests involved two separate criminal groups. A four-man syndicate comprising Emeka Akwara, 19; David Segun, 21; Samuel Ariori, 21; and Lukman Ariori, 19, was linked to the killing of an Uber driver on January 9. The suspects reportedly ordered a ride at Chevron in the Lekki area and directed the driver toward Obalende. Upon reaching a secluded area, they robbed and fatally stabbed the driver multiple times in the neck. Despite their attempt to steal the vehicle, they were unsuccessful.
Prompt intervention by a passerby and a good Samaritan led to the immediate apprehension of two suspects, who were handed over to the police. Subsequent investigations resulted in the arrest of the remaining two members of the gang. The police recovered a Toyota Camry, knives, and other evidence from the suspects, while the victim’s body was deposited at the Mainland Hospital morgue in Yaba.
In another incident, a three-man syndicate was arrested for killing another Uber driver, Oluwaseyi Fowler, on September 12. The suspects, identified as Edmond Julius, 34; Abdullahi Umar, 32; and Saturday Oke, 40, confessed to kidnapping Fowler in the Ajah area, murdering him, and stealing his Toyota Camry. They later sold the vehicle to a criminal receiver. Their confession led police to recover the decomposed body of the victim, as well as the stolen car.
The suspects in both cases have been charged to court.
Commissioner Ishola urged drivers operating under platforms such as Uber, Taxify, and Lagride to exercise caution. He advised them to avoid carrying multiple passengers at once, conduct passenger checks where possible, and ensure passengers sit in the front seat for better visibility.
“This is the third incident of this nature reported in three months. There may be more unreported cases,” Ishola noted. He added that the command plans to summon ride-hailing drivers for security training to equip them with precautionary measures.
