Police, Army Destroy IPOB Camp in Anambra After Five-Hour Gun Battle
Police in Anambra State have destroyed a militia camp belonging to the Eastern Security Network (ESN) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, following a joint operation that lasted more than five hours.
The operation, which took place in the early hours of September 2, 2025, was carried out by a combined team of police officers, soldiers from the 302 Artillery Regiment and 14 Field Engineer Regiment, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Anambra State Vigilante (Agunechemba).
According to police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga, the militants engaged the security forces in a fierce gun battle before their camp was eventually overrun and destroyed. Several of the insurgents reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds sustained during the exchange of fire.
Items recovered from the site included a white Lexus 470 SUV and several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Ikenga said the area has been stabilized and normalcy restored, while efforts are underway to track down the fleeing suspects.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity across Anambra, assuring residents that the joint security forces will continue to monitor the situation and sustain operations aimed at restoring peace in the state.
