Police Apprehend Cultism Kingpin, 18 Accomplices in Sagamu After String of Killings
In a major breakthrough, the Ogun State Police Command has successfully detained 19 individuals suspected of being involved in cult-related activities, among them the alleged kingpin of the Eiye confraternity, Ogunnibi Hammed. The arrests come in the wake of a spate of violent clashes between rival cult factions, Eiye and Aiye, in Sagamu, which tragically resulted in the loss of 20 lives.
Confirming the apprehensions to reporters in Abeokuta on Monday, Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola detailed that the suspects were taken into custody during a meticulously executed tactical operation by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and the Anti-Cultism Unit on Sunday.
The operation targeted the suspected cultists who had been responsible for spreading terror in several regions, including Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ilishan within the state. Odutola emphasized, “This notorious cultist, Hammed, has been widely known for his involvement in gruesome attacks against rival cult groups in Ogun state.”
Among those apprehended were Sodipo Azeez, who also goes by the alias Bintobo; Ilori Gbenga; Lamina Yusuf; Kolawole Rasaq; Adelaja Otusanya; Adeyemi Soneye; Oseni Toheeb; Thank God Naba; Lekan Qudus; Adelusi Omotayo; Timothy Monday; Ayomide Ishmael; Oboje Jeremiah; Ayoola Oladayo; Jacob Chidi; John Innocent; Ayangbile Victor, and Jacob Sunday.
Odutola noted, “All the suspects have confessed to being active members of different cult groups.” The police have vowed to continue their efforts to curb cult-related violence and ensure the safety and security of the communities affected by these criminal activities.
