Peter Obi Moves Closer to PDP Return as 2027 Coalition Talks Deepen – Report
As part of the 2027 elections preparations, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, met behind closed doors with the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed. The meeting, which took place in Bauchi, is fueling speculation that Obi may soon return to the PDP, where he once served as a vice-presidential candidate.
Sources within the Bauchi State Government House revealed that the purpose of Obi’s visit was to align with PDP governors amid growing calls for him and his 2023 running mate, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, to rejoin the party. It was disclosed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been actively lobbying for Obi’s return, even appealing to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to help persuade him. The push is reportedly aimed at uniting opposition forces to present a stronger front in 2027 and rebuild a country mired in economic hardship and insecurity.
The PDP is reportedly reflecting on the fallout from its 2023 defeat, with party leaders acknowledging zoning disputes as a major contributing factor. Discussions are said to be ongoing with a renewed sense of purpose and willingness to make necessary sacrifices for unity.
Following the meeting, Governor Mohammed expressed his readiness to work closely with Obi, hailing him as the de facto leader of the opposition due to his political influence and credibility. He emphasized the need for a united opposition capable of offering real solutions and holding the current government accountable.
“Obi is the leader of the opposition in Nigeria because of his position and pedigree,” Mohammed said. “I am ready to work with him to close ranks and bring good governance. The time has come to step forward with sincerity and focus to rescue the country from mediocrity.”
He noted that all PDP governors were in support of the discussions and hinted that further collaborations between Obi and the PDP Governors Forum should be expected in the coming months.
Speaking after the meeting, Obi stated that the visit was centered on the state of the nation and the future of Nigeria. He stressed that addressing poverty, especially in the North, was essential to curbing rising criminality. According to Obi, investment in agriculture, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment is the pathway to rebuilding the country and restoring dignity in governance.
“We must deal with poverty before we can deal with criminality,” Obi said. “People don’t know where the next meal will come from. Until that is solved, we can’t move forward. What we need is investment in people, especially the youth, through education and health, not empty political noise.”
He criticized the current political discourse for focusing on trivial matters while ignoring urgent national issues like hunger and poverty.
The political landscape is shifting as key figures within the PDP continue to call for unity. There is mounting pressure on Atiku Abubakar to step aside in favor of new leadership that can galvanize broader support. Buba Galadima, a close ally of NNPP’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, echoed this sentiment, urging Atiku to let others take the lead. “Our major problem is age,” Galadima said. “If I were Atiku’s adviser, I would tell him to step aside and help move the country forward. The support he once enjoyed is no longer guaranteed.”
