“Peter Obi Has Set a New Record for Political Desperation” — Presidency
The Presidency has accused former Anambra State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure, Peter Obi, of political inconsistency and opportunism, warning that his recent actions raise questions about his credibility and commitment to principles.
Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, made the remarks in a post on X, reacting to a viral video in which Obi appeared to align himself with political figures he had previously criticised.
“Peter Obi has set a new record for political desperation,” Onanuga wrote. “In his pursuit of the presidency, he has shown himself to be an unprincipled politician, willing to go back on his words, abandon his political platform if it no longer serves his interest, and even ‘eat his own vomit.’”
The video in question shows Obi acknowledging politicians such as David Mark, Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, Atiku Abubakar, and Rotimi Amaechi as key leaders within Nigeria’s political space. This, according to the Presidency, contrasts sharply with Obi’s previous posture during the last election, when he campaigned on distancing himself from what he described as a “corrupt and discredited political establishment.”
Onanuga argued that Obi’s new stance suggests a pattern of shifting positions dictated by political ambition rather than principle. “In his politics of desperation, he is willing to associate with anyone, including those he had previously pilloried,” he said. “He can make U-turns on any matter, even on his political ideology, if he has one.”
The Presidency also criticised Obi’s handling of his supporters. Onanuga stated that the former governor’s recent remarks “throw his supporters under the bus, further underscoring his series of contradictions and confusion.” He added, “No one can be sure where he stands on any issue. He shifts with the wind and the trends on X.”
Observers note that the exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria’s political discourse over ideological consistency, leadership credibility, and the boundaries between principle and political expedience. For the Presidency, Onanuga concluded, effective leadership demands clarity and consistency—qualities he suggested are absent in Obi’s approach to politics.
“Peter Obi’s willingness to abandon his past convictions when they no longer align with his political interests reflects a troubling approach to leadership,” Onanuga said. “It raises serious questions about his reliability as a political figure and the trustworthiness of his campaign messages.”
